If a customer calls your business and you can’t answer the phone, what do they hear? Hopefully your phone doesn’t just ring and ring with no option for them to leave a message – if that’s the case you need to bear in mind that 85% of those callers won’t call back.
Do you just have the generic message that your phone came with? It’s better than nothing, but not much. It won’t inspire confidence in your caller that you care about your business.
Maybe you’ve recorded a message but you’re not happy with it. Lots of people hate the way they sound on a recording, or just don’t like recording themselves, and they come across sounding unsure or nervous, which is definitely not the impression you want to leave your callers with.
Your voicemail greeting could be the first impression a potential new client gets of your business if you’re not able to answer the phone right away, so you need to make sure it’s a good one!
Equally if you keep your phone on after business hours, but you don’t actually want to take business calls, then you should consider having an out of hours message that tells people you’re closed and asks them to call back another time. That way they still feel seen and heard and are more likely to try again.
