Heritage audio tour case study

If you’ve been wondering where to find a specialist voice over artist for museums, galleries, exhibitions, cathedrals, churches or historic sites, or if you’re interested in how audio enhances the museum visitor experience you’ve come to the right place!

With a PhD in Archaeological Sciences, experience of working at a museum (Eureka! in Halifax) and an interest in history, it is perhaps not surprising that voiceovers for museums and galleries are among my most favourite projects. This includes audio guides for museum exhibitions, audio tours of historic sites, and narration for heritage related projects.

My Dad is an historian so when I was younger, I was taken to many archaeological sites and museums, and if there was an audio guide available, I always used it. I found they would bring the exhibits to life for me. I didn’t know then that one day I would be a professional voiceover artist for museum audio guides myself!

I’ve narrated a number of audio guides and tours for museums, galleries, churches, cathedrals and historic sites around the world. These include the English version of the art gallery audio tour for the Escher in het Paleis gallery in The Hague, the Massey Shaw Fireboat museum in London, and I’m the British voice over for the Gooi and Vecht tourism board’s 360 virtual reality tour in The Netherlands.

Ancient religious buildings are a delight to describe, and I am the voice of the audio guide for St Mary Redcliffe, a beautiful church in Bristol, and I have written a case study about this project

Audio enhances the visitor experience, as not only does it bring exhibits in museums and galleries to life, but it also makes them more accessible, especially for visitors who may be visually impaired. I have written a blog about voice over for heritage sector audio tours and interactive exhibitions.

Here are some ways I can help you with professional voice over for heritage related projects:

  • Narrating audio guides for museums or galleries to guide visitors around the space and bring exhibits to life for them
  • Recording audio for interactive exhibits for children or adults
  • Narrating audio tours that take visitors around historic towns or cities
  • Interpretation of archaeological sites or historic landmarks
  • Narrating audio guides for cathedrals and churches, to attract visitors to visit, and then keep them there for a while!
  • Storytelling for museum or gallery exhibits. Here’s an example of an art installation at York Minster
  • Documentary narration for film, video or audio content relating to heritage, history or culture. Here’s an example – a prisoner of war diary from the Second World War.
  • Working with town or city councils, or tourist boards to create audio tours for their area to increase tourism
  • And if you need a multilingual audio guide, I know other voice over artists who speak different languages.

In addition I have also worked on projects that are ‘heritage adjacent’ such as this video for Premier Access Scaffolding who specialise in scaffolding for historic buildings, and an e-learning course on safeguarding for staff working in heritage sector, with Styles and Faal Safeguarding

Have a look at what previous clients have said:

  • Richard Godley, East Peak Countryside Associates CIC

‘We needed someone to read extracts from a WW2 POW diary. Liz was the obvious choice having heard and seen the types of work she had delivered in the past. She executed the task to perfection. The owner of the diary, (who’s father had written it, and who had never read it), said she she was at first nervous about listening. She messaged me to say Liz had put her at ease with her voice and for the first time she listened to her fathers diary. Would I recommend Liz …..of course I would and you’d be a fool not to use her.’

  • Rhys Williams, St Mary Redcliffe

‘We contacted Liz to help us produce some audio content for the church’s guide on the Bloomberg Connects app. Liz was fantastic to work with throughout the process. She was immediately enthusiastic about producing the content we required, and helpful and responsive in answering questions about the recording process. She looked after the entire recording process and delivered a series of highly professional sounding recordings with an amazingly quick turnaround. The quality is excellent and the audio has really helped to improve our app content and help us present the history of the church more professionally. We highly recommend working with Liz.’

  • Daryll Sleight, Premier Access Scaffolding

‘Liz was a joy to work with !
A very professional and efficient service.
Understood our brief and delivered exactly what she said she would.’

  • Erik Kersten, Escher in het Paleis

‘As editor of Escher at The Palace I’ve worked with Liz on our new highlights audio tour. She has a great voice which draws in the user, making you feel close to Maurits Escher. Engaging, professional and very fast. A great combination :-)’

  • Phillippa Wood, Baysgarth House Museum

‘I worked with Liz on two audio guides for Baysgarth House Museum, and found her to be very professional with excellent communication skills. Her voiceover work was of a very high standard, and I would recommend her to any other heritage institutions looking to commission similar audio guides.’
